Easy A has been on what feels like all the movie channels today, so I thought we should discuss how much we love Easy A and Emma Stone. If, for some reason, you have been living in a cave your whole life or have some weird dislike for romantic(ish) comedies, then I'll tell you what you need to know regarding this movie. Easy A is a movie depicting the strange and somewhat relatable life of a teenage girl who lives in California named Olive Penderghast.
Olive is a good student and is, for the most part, blending in when it comes to her high school status. However, this comfortable invisibility is shattered when she lies to her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka) about how she had sex with a date over the weekend. This is totally made up, seeing as she actually spent her weekend singing "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield and told Rhi how she had a date over the weekend so Olive originally wouldn't have to spend the weekend camping with her overdramatic BFF and her That So '70s parents. This rumor was found out by the (very cliched) Bible thumper Marianne Bryan (Amanda Bynes). The rumor of Olive's one-night stand spreads fast.In her literature class, Olive finds herself in a quarrel with another girl, which lands Olive in the principal's office. The next day, she serves detention with an openly gay peer named Brandon (Dan Byrd) with whom she discusses how to avoid being bullied for his sexual orientation by saying he had sex with a girl. The two end up at popular girl Melody Bostik's party where the slip away and pretend to hook-up. Much like real-life, Brandon is deemed a sex-god, while Olive is now the school "super slut". After more rumors begin to circulate about Olive's hook-ups, which we know are fake, things take a "turn for the scandalous". The literature teacher, Mr. Griffith, is making the class read The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. So because Olive doesn't do anything "half-assed", she buys sexy lingerie-inspired outfits that she embroiders a red A on. Then throughout the duration of the movie, Olive solicits sex for money, sort of. Actually no. Not at all. She solicits the idea that one has had sex with her for money. Yet, Olive is still a virgin. In the midst of all this, she has her sights set on the school mascot himself, Todd. Todd is one of the few people who believes that Olive really isn't a slut. So at the end of the movie you find out that the whole film was basically a webcast Olive made to tell her peers that she didn't really sleep with anyone and that they were all rumors. And then Olive and Todd ride away on a lawnmower like they do in an '80s movie. The movie is funny, endearing, and has moments that everyone can relate to. I give a lot of this film's comedic credit to Emma Stone who plays the funny, quirky, creative, and relatively average California girl Olive Penderghast.
Emma Stone has hit the landmine in Hollywood lately. She started acting as a child and had super small roles to begin with like the voice of Ivana Tipton on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Diane on Malcolm in the Middle. Her résumé is quite bulky including performances as Jules in Superbad alongside Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Seth Rogen, The House Bunny, Friends with Benefits alongside Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, and Andy Samberg, Crazy, Stupid, Love with Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling, The Help, and the newly released and highly anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man where Stone will star alongside her real-life BF Andrew Garfield.
Stone will be in two movies that have yet to release trailers, seeing as they are in the final stages of production, Red Band and The Croods. She will also be in the upcoming movie Gangster Squad, in theatres September 7th this year, along with Sean Penn, Josh Broslin, and Ryan Gosling (...yet again). Speaking of her reoccuring co-star, they have also been talked about to play the leads in the film adaptation of the notoriously naughty novel Fifty Shades of Grey. I would also like to mention that Emma recieved the Trailblazer Award at this last week's MTV Movie Awards, where she looked absolutley XOXO-worthy. One might find a picture below. That's all for now. Until next time.
